Every year at the end of October, a three-day celebration takes place in Mexico and other parts of Latin America to honor those who have passed away. The Day of the Dead is featured in several movies, including Coco and Spectre, and has become a cultural asset of Mexico.

Mexico’s Day of the Dead

While most people in the U.S. associate the end of October with Halloween, in Mexico they have been celebrating “Dia de Muetros,” or Day of the Dead for centuries. It combines Christian traditions and pre-Hispanic Mexican superstitions. The three-day celebration features special food, drinks, altars commemorating the dead, and a poetry contest. After the 2015 James Bond Movie Spectre featured a fictional Day of the Dead parade in Mexico City, the Mexican government organized a real parade for the holiday, which was a success right of the game, with over 250,000 people in attendance in 2016. Although the pagan nature of the holiday flies in the face of Catholicism, the primary religion of Mexico, it is celebrated equally with All Saint’s Day.

A pagan is a person who is a follower of a religion that worships multiple gods, gods based on nature, or in simpler terms, a religion that is not Christinaty, Judaism, or Islam, etc. Pagan practices were common around the world as an answer to the mysteries of life before the big three religions came along.

이교도란 여러 신을 숭배하거나 져연을 바탕으로 한 신들을 숭배하는 종교의 추종자를 말하는데, 간단히 말해서 기독교나 유대교, 이슬람교 등이 아닌 종교를 믿는 사람입니다. 이교도들의 관행은 삶의 신비에 대한 해답으로서 전 세계적으로 흔한 현상이었습니다. 세 개의 주요 종교가 출현하기 전에는 말이죠.
