Wendy : Did you hear about the huge discovery at an archaeological site in San Diego, California? It’s going to change history as we know it.
Rick : I heard about it a long time ago, but it was dismissed by most experts at the time.
Wendy : Well, it turns out those experts were wrong. They have so much at stake with their belief that the Americas weren’t inhabited by humans until 15,000 years ago, that it clouds their judgements.
Rick : How old do they think the site is?
Wendy : They estimate it’s 130,000 years old!
Rick : It looks like a lot of scientists are going to find themselves on the wrong side of history.

아래 영상에서 강연자는 “너무 많은 게 달려 있었다” 라는 말을 하기 위해 영어로 “Too much was at stake.” 라는 표현을 쓴다. 누구나 활용할 수 있는 표현이라고 생각한다. 기억하자. “I was afraid at that time because too much was at stake.”

아래 영상에서 “cloud one’s judgement” 라는 표현이 쓰이는 걸 알 수 있다. YouTube에는 이 표현을 사용한 영상이 쏟아질 정도로 많지는 않은 것 같다. 어쨌든 좋은 표현이니 기억해두자.

아래 TED 강의자는 리더십은 뛰어난 사람들이 창의적으로 일할 수 있는 공간을 만들어주는 것이라고 소개한다. 리더는 무대를 만드는 사람이지 그 무대에서 뛰는 사람이 아니다. 아래 영상은 Pixar의 예를 소개하면서 청중을 파악하는 중에 하는 말이다. 강연자는 “픽사(Pixar) 애니메이션을 본 사람이 많은 것 같네요.” 라고 말한다.

In today’s dialog, to dismiss something is to disregard it as incorrect without considering all the facts. When one dismisses something or is dismissive in general, they might believe they are an expert or are just plain arrogant.
오늘의 대화문에서, 무언가를 묵살한다는 것은 모든 사실을 고려하지 않고 잘못된 것으로 보고 무시하는 것입니다. 무언가를 묵살하거나 전반적으로 무시한다면, 그것은 자신이 전문가라고 믿거나 혹은 그저 오만한 것이기 때문이라고 볼 수 있습니다.
아래 인터뷰에서 dismiss 라는 단어를 fears 와 함께 사용했다. 여성은 이렇게 대답한다: “이러한 두려움을 반드시 떨쳐버릴 수는 없지만, 그것들을 관리하는 것은 중요하다고 생각해요”
