(2019.10.08) Scuba Diving the Great Barrier Reef

1. Power Warm-up

Our travelers are getting ready to dive on the world’s largest coral reef. Todd has mixed feelings about swimming among the dying coral, damaged by increasing temperatures of the oceans around the world, while Mary believes it’s important to spread the word about the reef.

3. Power Dialog

Scuba Diving the Great Barrier Reef

Mary: I’m so excited to finally see the Great Barrier Reef. I’m glad we took a detour north.

Todd: Don’t get your hopes up. The reef may not look like it did on nature shows from when we were kids.

Mary: I know all about coral breaching, but our guide said he would take us to a really healthy area.

Todd: It’s on the brink of collapse and people are still trampling all over it.

Mary: Maybe the more people who see how bad it is, the better chance we’ll find a solution.

Todd: I hope so. Let’s just enjoy our day and be mindful of what we touch.

4. Power Note

1) get one’s hopes up

to quickly become optimistic about something

I don’t know. I don’t want to get my hopes up in case he can’t do it, but also I want to make sure that that voice would be exactly right for the boy.

2) on the brink of

almost about to happen

After they’ve been tested and on the brink of giving up that they decide – where everyone else gave up, they continued to push forward, and that’s why where they’re at. That’s where you win in business. It’s not that… The reason why most businesses fail because most people give up just before they’re ready. Just before things or good things are going to happen.

“After they’ve been tested and on the brink of giving up that they decide – where everyone else gave up, they continued to push forward, and that’s why where they’re at.”

3) mindful of

aware of what is going on at the moment

It’s not because we’re not mindful of the needs here in this country; it’s because if we make those investments, we’re also going to be in a better position to protect our country and improve our country.

“It’s not because we’re not mindful of the needs here in this country…”

5. Power Pattern

I know all about…

I know all about what you and your brothers did last weekend.

Saturday Night Live 혹은 줄여서 SNL 에서 “I know all about…”

I know all about award shows.”

6. Power Vocabulary

trample

To trample on something is to carelessly walk on something. When there is a riot or a fire, people may end up trampling on tother people out of fear and concern only for their own life.

“If you believe we ought to take care of the poor, not trample the poor, can you prove that?”

7. Power Practice

(get one’s hopes up)
*** The coach said I might start at center tomorrow, but I’m not going to get my hopes up.

(on the brink of)
*** The engine was on the brink of overheating, so I turned it off.

(mindful of)
*** Try to be mindful of germs when you are in crowded spaces.
