A Korean-American chef has come a long way from the mean streets of Los Angeles to an empire of restaurants and food trucks. Roy Choi, a.k.a. “Papi,” trained as a chef at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, worked at top restaurants, and even hosts his own CNN interview show called “Street Food.”

Camila: Who is Roy Choi? Sounds partly Korean.
Jasper: He’s a Korean-American from L.A. who made a name for himself with his fleet of food trucks called “Kogi.”
Camila: Come on! Food trucks are a dime a dozen in L.A. What’s so special about his food trucks?
Jasper: They sell Korean barbecue-style tacos. Making it as a food truck operator is easier said than done. He also consulted on the 2014 movie Chef.
Camila: I guess you can chalk it up to hard work.
Jasper: It doesn’t hurt that his food is among the most highly rated in the city, either.

American Airline 처럼 큰 회사에서 당신은 어떻게 유명해질 수 있었냐는 질문에 CEO Doug Parker는 이렇게 대답한다.
“You show up and do your job. And try and make sure that you’re being responsive to what people, the organizations’s looking for. Again, I wasn’t incredibly hard-driven and cutthroat. I’m going to make sure that I get this job before someone else does. But I certainly cared about what I did. I took it seriously.”
“간단히 말해서 특별한 비결이 있는 게 아니라 출근해서 내가 해야 할 일을 하고, 사람들과 회사의 필요에 잘 반응했기 때문에 가능했다고 말한다. 그는 자신이 매우 강인하거나 원하는 것을 얻기 위해 무엇이든 하는 그런 사람은 아니었다고 한다. 하지만 다른 사람이 이 직장을 얻기 전에 내가 먼저 얻을 것이라고 자신을 했으며, 내가 한 일에 대해 확실히 신경을 썼고, 매우 진지하게 받아들였다.” (뒤에 더 중요한 내용이 나온다. 여기서는 생략한다)
2) be a dime a dozen
to be very common
흔하디 흔하다, 쌔고 쌔다, 흔해 빠지다
YouTube 검색 결과를 근거로 얘기하자면, 이 표현을 사용하게 되면 be 동사가 단수보다는 복수가 되는 경우가 많은 것 같다. 그래서 “복수명수 are a dime a dozen.” 이라고 생각하는 게 더 낫지 않을까 싶다. 마음에 드는 영상이 많이 이번에는 특별히 영상을 두 개 소개한다.
두 번째 영상에서 발표자는 pencil-pushing theorists 라는 표현을 사용하는데 “회사에서 편안하게 앉아서 아무 생각 없이 무의미하게 서류와 펜이나 굴리는 사무직원이라는 경멸의 뉘앙스가 담긴 표현” 이라고 한다. (링크)

말처럼 쉽지 않은
평일 아침에는 회사를 가기 전에 영어학원에 간다. 거기서 영어를 잘하려면, 들은 내용을 blending 혹은 unblending 할 수 있어야 한다고 했다. 아래 여성은 오늘 배운 “easier said than done” 이라는 표현을 unblending 하여 정확하게 발음한다.
이번에는 unblending 이 된 “easier said than done” 을 들어보자.
영어를 잘 하려면 한 표현을 명확하게 발음하는 blending 과, 원어민이 일상적으로 말할 때처럼 발음하는 unblending을 자유자재로 할 수 있어야 한다.

아래 영상에서 남성은 North Dakota가 석유 붐으로 이 모든 것을 인정받았다는 것은 해가 되지 않는다. 여기서 말하는 “이 모든 것”은 지역의 경제에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 모든 것을 말한다.

함대
A fleet is a group of vehicles. In the military, a fleet of ships is a group of ships that travel or stay together. A shipping company might have a fleet of trucks, while a delivery company could have a fleet of motorcycles.
운송 수단의 무리를 fleet 이라고 합니다. 군대에서는 함께 활동하는 함선의 무리를 함대라고 합니다. 운송 회사는 여러 대의 트럭을, 배달 업체는 여러 대의 오토바이를 소유하고 있기도 하죠.
아래 영상에서는 fleet 을 사람 앞에 써서 “매우 많다”는 표현으로 사용하고 있다. 검색해보니 그렇게도 쓰는 것 같아서 소개한다.
아래 영상에서는 NASA에서 위성들의 집합을 “fleet of satellites” 라고 표현한다.
Many satellites have been added to this fleet of satellites observing the Earth and these satellites are and will continue to provide comprehensive observations from which we can understand the Earth and develop the model that allows us to predict the future.
많은 위성들이 지구를 관찰하는 이 위성들의 함대에 추가되었고, 이 위성들은 우리가 지구를 이해하고 미래를 예측할 수 있는 모델을 개발할 수 있는 포괄적인 관측을 계속 제공할 것이다.
