(2019.10.05) Universal Basic Income

1. Power Warm-up

As automation increases across more industries, an increasing number of jobs will become obsolete. From self-driving cars to customer service workers, many people will either remain unemployed or have to be retrained, thus losing their ability to earn a living for a while.

2. Power Expressions

1) a thing of the past
2) back something
3) dead in the water

a) to support something
b) stalled or not functional
c) something that no longer exists or is no longer popular

정답은 1 – c, 2 – a, 3 – b 이다.

3. Power Dialog

Universal Basic Income

With the continuing development of artificial intelligence and robotics, more and more jobs are going to disappear. Full-time jobs may become a thing of the past, leading to unemployment for millions of people around the world. One solution proposed to prevent mass unemployment leading to mass poverty is universal basic income (UBI). This would be a minimum amount of money provided to every citizen to cover basic needs. Some see this as a government giveaway, while those who back the idea believe it is the most viable solution. Presently, the idea is dead in the water in most countries since the problem isn’t big enough yet. But the day will come when a decision will have to be made.

4. Power Note

1) a thing of the past

something that no longer exists or is no longer popular

과거가 된 무언가가 있다면, “X is a thing of the past.”

“Next, building static teams is increasingly a thing of the past.

2) back something

to support something

“But if he goes into something else, I’ll back him again because you sit down with the person and you know this might not be the idea, but they’re going to hit someday.”

3) dead in the water

stalled or not functional

여기서 강연자는 “dead in the water”라는 표현을 사용한다.

“If this piece breaks, you’re kind of dead in the water.”

5. Power Pattern

The day will come when…

The day will when you will thank me for being strict with you.

“Hopefully, the day will come when Olympic athletes can compete on a Korean peninsula that is free of nuclear weapons, and where all Koreans can live together and can share their dreams.”

6. Power Vocabulary

viable

When something is viable, it is possible or likely to work. In the previous article, UBI was seen as currently not viable. Thus, it is believed to be impossible in today’s political and social climate. Airplanes are viable idea because we know they exist. A time machine, however, isn’t currently viable.
